Our Story. Our Heart.
NO EMPTY BEDSIDES was initiated in 2016 by Naama Kanarek following a conversation with good friends who had spent long weeks at their son’s hospital bedside in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. They shared their personal experience along with the heartbreaking fact that they had witnessed many children alone without any parent by their bedside. This broke Naama’s heart and motivated her to try to change this situation. Soon after, Naama met Sylvia Haber who had overcome a life-threatening illness in 2012 and had spent weeks in a hospital bed. This initiative resonated with Sylvia on a deep, personal level and together they formed a partnership and became Co-Founders of No Empty Bedsides.
NO EMPTY BEDSIDES works directly with the Supportive and Pediatric Palliative Care team at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children and offers appropriate financial solutions to families in the Pediatric Support and Palliative Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Some of the ways we help include transportation to and from the hospital, help with parking costs, backup care for the sick child’s siblings, meals, and overnight hotel accommodations. Most of the children we follow are the ones most vulnerable to long hospital stays that strain their families’ resources and abilities to be at their bedside.
NO EMPTY BEDSIDES is run by volunteers only and is motivated by goodwill with no profit to anybody except for the hospitalized children and their families. The money donated to No Empty Bedsides is directed to families in need and is available for their benefit immediately upon donation.
